It depends on the fuel you burn, the hours run, and type of duty your boiler experiences. The minimum is once a year, but if the fireside or waterside is extremely dirty, you should be inspecting and cleaning your boiler several times a year. Remember, soot and scale are insulating materials and rob you of fuel dollars!
Any time you have an open steam system, where makeup water is being added regularly, you are bringing oxygen into the system. This oxygen must be removed either mechanically (a deaerator), or with sulfite chemicals. If your makeup exceeds ten percent, you will pay for the cost of a deaerator in a few years with reduced sulfite usage. Failure to treat for oxygen in the water will result in pitting, scale and expensive boiler repair!
Cleaver- Brooks firetube boilers can be converted from steam to hot water. Some other boilers cannot be converted. Call us for an evaluation of your boiler.
You are correct: firetube, watertube, cast iron, copper finned tube, vertical, horizontal, stackable, modular, Low Nox, condensing, non-condensing etc. We have experience applying all of these boilers.
